History of the old name of Lahore

It is suggested through oral traditions that the city of Lahore was named after Lava, who was the son of the Hindu God Rama. There is a vacant temple in Lahore fort that is dedicated in honor of Lava. Moreover, it is also said that the Ravi River is named after the Hindu goddess Durga. The name “loh-kot” is mentioned in the Rajput Chronicles meaning Fort of Loh.

Lahore was initially established as a small village that gains its glory with the passage of time. Many great emperors ruled it over the years including Ghaznavis, Gories, Lodhis, Mughals, and then the British empire. The city remarkably flourished in the Mughal empire. The Mughal emperors built many exceptional and astonishing landmarks that changed the destiny of Lahore. These landmarks include the Badshahi Mosque, the Lahore Fort, the Shalimar Garden, and the tombs of different emperors. Different gardens, parks, and green spaces built there turned it into the city of gardens.
