Lahore-Islamabad Motorway known as M-2 Motorway is the main highway in Pakistan. Motorways and other highways are often closed in the winter seasons in Pakistan due to fog or smog to avoid accidents. Introduction and History of Lahore-Islamabad Motorway:

Lahore-Islamabad Motorway was the first motorway constructed in South Asia. It is  375 kilometers long connecting Lahore to Islamabad/Rawalpindi. It is completely present in Punjab. The Motorway was conceived by the ex-prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif in his first term. It is a six-lane motorway.

On 30 December 1991, the contract for the construction of the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway was given to Daewoo Group of South Korea. Its cost was finalized at Rs.23,686 billion.

At the time of its construction, there were only two routes that connected the two cities. One was GT Road which was a dangerous and uncomfortable route and the other was the Lahore-Multan highway which wasn’t a direct route. Therefore, there was a need of constructing a safer and more convenient route from Lahore to Islamabad. Then the government took the step of starting the construction of the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway. Its construction was completed in 1999. The motorway was constructed by using modern techniques, machinery, and equipment that ensures its sustainability.
