History of the system of measuring land

The history of measuring systems is as old as the Indus Valley Civilization. It began in the 3rd or 4th millennium and was established by the people of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. According to Hebrew Bible and historical records, length was measured with the help of the forearm, hand, fingers, etc.

Later, Maurya and Mughal Empires started using the measures to determine the size of land and started collecting land tax.

At that time, people used the units of gazz and bhiga for measuring length. Gazz is nearly equal to 3 feet and bhiga is equal to 2420 sq gazz. People used to measure the land with bamboo rods having iron joints. East India Company used the British system of measurement in India.

Basic units of measurement

Square meter

A square meter is the unit of measurement commonly used in Europe and other countries. It is used for measuring rooms, houses, etc., and is represented by the symbol m^2.

Square yard

The most common and comprehensible word used for a square yard is gazz. In Pakistan, especially while measuring clothes it is mostly used. However, it is also used for the measurement of plots in Karachi.

Square foot

A square foot is a unit used internationally for measuring land. It is widely used throughout the world for measuring the sizes of plots and is represented by the symbol ft^2.

Marla

A marla is a traditional unit of measuring land used in the countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc. In India and Bangladesh, the standards of conversion for marla are the same. But in Pakistan, various conversion standards are followed.

Kanal

Actually, kanal is a bigger unit than marla. 1 kanal is equal to 20 marlas. This unit is mostly used for measuring the size of larger plots. Marla and kanal units are in use since the British rule in the subcontinent.

Acre

An acre is a unit greater than kanal. 1 acre is equal to an area of 4840 gazz (sq yard) and 4047 sq meters.

Murabba

A murabba is an even greater unit of measurement than an acre. Because 1 murabba is nearly equal to 25 acres. It has been in use even before British rule. Murabba is different from other units in the sense that it does not specify a particular area but it specifies the dimension.

Hectare

A hectare is a square with sides of 100 meters in length. Acre and hectare are two different units of measurement.  1 hectare is nearly equal to 2.5 acres, therefore we can say that a hectare is a bigger unit than an acre. But it is smaller than murabba.
